Athangudi Design Tiles

Athangudi tiles are handmade cement tiles originating from the village of Athangudi in Tamil Nadu’s Chettinad region, known for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and sustainable, eco-friendly production process. Unlike factory-made tiles, they are made by hand using a mixture of cement, sand, and natural oxides, then sun-dried and cured in water. These tiles are prized for their durability and the glossy finish that improves with age and use.

Production process

  • Artisans pour a liquid mixture of cement and colored oxide into a mold on a glass piece.
  • A thin layer of local sand is laid, and the tile is then filled with a mixture of cement, sand, and small stone aggregates to about three-fourths of an inch thickness.
  • The tiles are then cured in water for a minimum of 21 days.
